A Phisycal-space Statical Analysis System (PSAS) has been developed at Data Assimilation Office (DAO), NASA/GSFC. PSAS has been designed as an incremental improvement over lhe current Optimal Interpolation (01) based in Data Assimilation System (DAS), and provide a framework to test advanced forecast errar covariance models; a global analysis PSAS resulting for lhe CPTEC/COLA model, is being developed at Centro de Previsão de Tempo e Estudos Climáticos (CPTEC) The complexity of PSAS solution is still computationally expensive. For operational feasibility, several physical approximations have been implemented in PSAS, and lhe code has been parallelized to utilize a shared memory multi-processor NEC-SX4 system, using OpenMP programming, it would become possible to provide weather forecasts initial field in a timely fashion.
