%X Understanding the social and institutional forces underlying land use changes is critical for discussing future scenarios of sustainability and ecosystem services provision. We propose in this paper a conceptual approach to represent of land change processes using an agent-based approach to deal with the heterogeneity of actors and institutional arrangements which influence rules and norms for natural resources management and territorial occupation.Examples are land tenure, territorial planning, and market arrangements. Key to our proposal is the definition of typologies of actors (farmers) and actions, whose basic behaviors can be modified according to institutional arrangements which act upon them. Such arrangements act (selectively) upon agents that represent individual farmers. The relationship between the agents and arrangements may also evolve over time. Institutional arrangements may be bounded in space, such as a protected area or a settlement project, affecting only the agents in that specific location (territorial arrangement); or not restricted to an area, involving only individuals engaged in a certain agreement, such as the case of the Beef Moratorium (socio-economical arrangement). The approach brings heterogeneity to land change models, while at the same time allowing the controlled exploration how institutions can affect land use decisions in different contexts. We believe this is a promising path to model socio-ecological systems at different scales.
